San Diego has some extraordinary dive sites.  Below are some of the most popular shore based dive sites in San Diego.

Dive Sites

Boundary Wall

A little over half a mile and straight out from the Marine Room in the La Jolla underwater canyon sits Boundary Wall.  Due to its distance from shore, GUE-San Diego divers use scooters to reach Boundary Wall.

Boundary Wall is a very colorful site as it is covered with red, purple and brown gorgonians.  Boundary Wall begins at a depth of 90 fsw and extends down to well past 200 fsw.

Typical marine life at Boundary Wall includes vermillion rock fish, brown rock fish, tree fish, scallops, lobster and kelp crabs.  It is also not uncommon to have a seal or sea lion join you for part of the dive.

La Jolla Shores

La Jolla Shores is the most popular shore dive site in San Diego.  A few hundred yards from the shore, the La Jolla underwater canyon begins at a depth of around 40 fsw.

Enter the water at the end of Vallecitos Rd. (right next to the showers/restrooms).  Kick out until you are in line with the end of Scripps Pier and drop.  Swim due west until you reach the top of the canyon at around 40 fsw.  Upon reaching the canyon wall, turn either north or south and follow the canyon wall and explore the holes and crevices in the wall.

Typical marine life includes sarcastic fringeheads, octopi, sheephead, rock fish and sheep crabs.  Occasionally, you will see guitar fish, halibut, seal, sea lions, cormorants and angel sharks.

La Jolla Cove

The second most popular shore dive site is the Cove.  The Cove has a rocky reef bottom. Therefore, the Cove is home to kelp forests. The Cove is a shallower dive with the maximum depth being only around 60 fsw.

A typical Cove dive starts with a 0.25 mile surface swim to buoy A and then drop.  However, often times, people drop well before buoy A and then swim underwater toward buoy A.

Typical marine life you will see on this dive include, kelp fish, sheephead and garabaldi.  If you are lucky, you may also see giant sea bass, 7 gill sharks, sea lions and seals.
